What are bereavement support groups?
Bereavement support groups allow those who have lost a loved one to share their struggles with others who have experienced a similar loss in a confidential space. They are a way to bring people together and feel connected. The strength of the group lies in the feelings of understanding that come from sharing similar experiences and struggles.
Sometimes people attending the group may share memories of their loved ones, happy or sad, or just how they feel in the present moment. What always prevails in the group are the feelings of connectedness and support. There are no rules about having to speak, you are always welcome to attend and just listen.
No one experiences grief in the same way and it is ok to discover that your feelings may sometimes be different to those experienced by others. Inside the safety of an understanding group, you may discover something about the uniqueness of your grief, or you may help others to identify aspects of their grief which until now have remained unnoticed. For example, sometimes it can be valuable to hear how others are coping with their grief or what they find helpful in their day-to-day lives.
Thoughts, feelings and experiences shared in this support group will stay in this group.
Although the groups are always facilitated by an experienced counsellor, the sessions are led by the people who come along and what they feel they need to talk about.
